Humility in Strength leader, Masika Akilah Ray

Dear Texas District One Readers,

My name is Masika Akilah Ray, and I am running for U.S. Congress to represent Texas District One. My campaign slogan is "Humility in Strength." It is the least of these whom I am most concerned about caring for and feeding. Before I discuss policy, I want to share a special encounter.

Last year at Big Daddy’s Stereo, I talked to someone getting his vehicle serviced. I mentioned my novel, "Wake Up Church, Answer the Call to Discipleship," which features a First Lady battling gluttony, who starts an accountability group inspired by Alcoholics Anonymous. I also shared that I’ve studied humility for four years and often give away Andrew Murray’s book "Humility," giving him one.

He surprised me by saying he was in real AA and invited me to a meeting. I accepted, not as an observer, but to confront my struggle with overindulgence in eating. I attended with my 25-year-old autistic daughter, and we experienced something profoundly moving. My baby was cute as she greeted people after the introductions. People shared openly without fear of judgment and received the community's support. When I confessed my struggle with food, I cried, overwhelmed by the honesty and courage of those who went before me. It was one of the most authentic community experiences I have had in years. It was better than church because people are now afraid to be vulnerable, as they, too, are human.

That moment reinforced something I already knew. None of us is perfect. Not the wealthy. Not the powerful. Not the privilege of any race. Not those in positions of authority.

Pride has always been the root of personal and national downfall. History shows us that unchecked arrogance leads to moral and financial ruin for generations. Humility, on the other hand, creates space for accountability, learning, unity, and growth. Humility is where true strength resides!

East Texas deserves leadership that understands this truth. We need leaders who are not obsessed with image or power, but who are willing to listen, admit mistakes, and serve with integrity. I am running because I believe every day East Texans should be able to take off masks, respect differences, and work together to build strong families and safe communities. We can achieve this together, as we care for one another.

My top priorities reflect that commitment:

  • A $1,000 yearly Self-Reliance Grant to help families grow food, learn agricultural skills, and reduce food insecurity through empowerment, not dependency.

  • Adding 30 percent licensed health care professionals to police response teams to address mental health crises before they turn into tragedy.

  • Updating the Family, Unity, and Dignity Act to prevent wrongful family separation connected to immigration enforcement, child welfare, and policing. And persevering until it becomes law.

I am compassionate, determined, and ready to serve with humility and strength. I respectfully ask for your vote, donations, and uplifting voice.
